What does my heart want,
for what does it yearn?
Creatures pass by me,
each in its turn.
as sirens they call;
fulfillment they offer,
promising all.
a void opens wide:
nothing can fill it,
no-thing beside
and saved me from sin:
the Master who called me
and made me His kin;
whose own burns so red:
the Friend who so loved
as to die in my stead.
the chasm unveiled,
therein do I throw me,
all else having paled
and the love that Christ be--
what does my heart want?
No more, Lord, than Thee.
